Description

Each year hundreds of people hike to the summit of Rooster Comb for its great views. Far fewer reach the summit by scaling its cliffs, but the mountain has a long and storied rock-climbing history. Whether you hike or climb to the top, the 2,788-foot peak offers a wonderful vista of the lower Great Range, the Brothers, and Johns Brook valley. Starting from the Rooster Comb Trailhead, follow the trail over a boardwalk through marshy ground to reach a junction with a loop trail around a small pond (the local elementary school kids built it long ago, so don't strain yourself too hard looking for beavers.) The trail will continue around the pond to the west, and will quickly depart into the beautiful deciduous forests typical of the region. After a flat start, don't be surprised when the trail begins to steepen. Roostercomb Peak is but a small barrier for many hikers seeking access to higher peaks. The trail will zigzag upwards and move over a combination of loamy soil and rocks. Watch your step, especially in the fall when leaves make the trail slick.
