Mills Mansion is a 65-room mansion built during the Gilded Age, with 14 bathrooms, elaborately carved and gilded furniture, 23 fireplaces, fine oriental rugs, silk fabrics, and a collection of art objects from Europe, ancient Greece, and the Far East. The mansion sits on 192 acres overlooking the Hudson River and as a state historic site, the estate is operated by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

The rich history of the estate dates back to 1792 when that land was first purchased by Morgan Lewis, the third governor of New York who constructed a colonial-style home on the site. That home burned down and the family replaced the structure with a Greek Revival mansion with 25 rooms. In 1890, the home was inherited by Morgan’s great-granddaughter, who commissioned a remodeling and enlargement of the mansion, which is as it stands today.

Straatsburgh State Historic Site is open for tours mid-April through October, Thursday through Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. The site is open for special programs January through mid-April.
