Atwater Vineyards

What They Are about

The wine may bring you to Atwater. The sunset makes leaving feel like a terrible idea.

Atwater Vineyards sits high above the eastern shore of Seneca Lake, where vineyard rows fall toward the water and the horizon seems to stretch halfway across the Finger Lakes. The view is enormous, but the experience never feels distant. Tastings are warm, seated, and guided by people who know the wines without making anyone feel as though they should have studied before arriving.

Then the afternoon light begins to change.

The Vista Bar comes alive. Another bottle finds its way to the table. Conversations slow, chairs turn toward the lake, and everyone on the property starts paying attention to the same thing.

The sunset is coming.

That view may be what first pulls people toward Atwater, but the wine gives the experience its depth.

The family-owned winery stretches across 80 scenic acres, with more than 40 acres of vines in production. Grapes have grown on these southeastern hillsides since the early 1900s, long before local entrepreneur Ted Marks purchased the established vineyard in 1999. Atwater opened for tastings and sales the following year, beginning a new chapter for a property already deeply connected to Finger Lakes wine history.

Estate-grown fruit anchors Atwater’s wine program. With more than 40 acres of vines in production, the team works close to the land and carries that connection from vineyard to cellar.

That distinction matters because Atwater is not interested in manufacturing a tidy story that sounds good on a label. It is interested in making honest wine that reflects the vineyard, the vintage, and every decision made between the vine and the bottle.

This is where classic Finger Lakes wine meets its more adventurous side.

Riesling and Cabernet Franc are natural introductions to Atwater. Then the collection starts pushing beyond what some visitors expect from the region.

Depending on what is currently pouring, a tasting might move into Blaufränkisch, Pinot Noir, pétillant naturel, or a skin-fermented orange wine with enough texture and personality to change the mind of someone who thought they already knew what white wine could be.

Neutral barrels, skin and stem contact, and natural sparkling fermentation allow Atwater’s winemaking team to build complexity without burying the character of the fruit. The wines are dry, expressive, and often unexpected, but they are never presented as a test of sophistication.

Atwater rewards curiosity. It does not demand expertise.

A guided seated tasting includes five wines, a small cracker and cheese sampling, and approximately 45 to 60 minutes with Atwater’s knowledgeable team. They connect the vineyard, vintage, and winemaking choices to what appears in the glass, but the experience feels like a conversation rather than a lecture.

New to wine? Say so.

Already obsessed with dry Riesling? Tell them.

Curious about pét-nat but not entirely sure what those words mean? This is exactly where that conversation should begin.

The experience is thoughtful without becoming stiff, informative without turning into homework, and serious about wine without asking anyone at the table to perform seriousness.

Then there is the Vista Bar.

During the warmer months, Atwater’s outdoor bar shifts the winery into an entirely different gear. Guests can order wine by the glass or bottle, cocktails, mocktails, beer, cider, cheese boards, and small bites while the lake stretches out below them.

This is where the tasting room’s quieter focus opens into something more social.

Atwater After Hours brings singer-songwriters, themed gatherings, visiting food vendors, and special events to the property. On select SunSET Series nights, DJs provide the soundtrack as the sun begins its slow descent across the opposite side of Seneca Lake.

There is something wonderfully unexpected about drinking Finger Lakes wine while a DJ plays above the vineyard.

The land is still beneath your feet. The wine still carries the place inside it. But now friends are dancing, cocktails are passing across the bar, locals are settling in beside travelers, and what began as a winery stop has quietly become the rest of the evening.

Atwater understands that wine does not have to be separated from the rest of your life to be fully appreciated.

It can belong inside a thoughtful conversation with a tasting host. It can also belong beside music, laughter, friends, dancing, and the moment an entire crowd turns toward the horizon because the sky has started changing color.

That dual personality is what makes Atwater worth planning around.

Come earlier for the wine. Settle into a tasting. Learn what grows around you, compare classic and experimental styles, and let the team lead you toward something you might never have ordered on your own.

Then stay later than you intended.

Order another glass at the Vista Bar. Build a small plate. Listen to the music. Watch the light move across the water.

Atwater’s connection to the land reaches beyond what appears in the bottle. The vineyard is certified through the New York Sustainable Winegrowing program, supporting its continuing commitment to responsible farming, the surrounding environment, and the health of Seneca Lake.

Atwater calls sustainability a promise in progress.

That choice of words feels right here because the lake is not scenery arranged behind the tasting room for effect. It helps shape the vineyard’s climate, influences what can grow on these slopes, and reminds everyone standing above it why the land deserves care.

Many wineries can give you a beautiful afternoon.

Atwater knows how to carry it into the evening.

It begins with a guided tasting and a deeper understanding of what Finger Lakes wine can be. It ends outside, glass in hand, while music drifts across the vineyard and the sun turns Seneca Lake gold.

Come for the wine. Stay until the lake steals the show.

Our Notes

  • Reserve the full experience. Reservations are recommended, especially on weekends. Guided tastings last approximately 45 to 60 minutes and include five wines with a small cracker and cheese sampling.

  • Time it for sunset. When the seasonal Vista Bar is open, visit later in the afternoon and leave room in your plans to stay. The western view across Seneca Lake is the experience nobody forgets.

  • Start classic, then get adventurous. Begin with Riesling or Cabernet Franc before asking which pét-nat, skin-fermented wine, or small-batch release is currently pouring.

  • Ask what came from the estate. Estate-grown fruit anchors Atwater’s program; ask the team which vineyard blocks and varieties shaped the wines currently pouring.

  • Check the After Hours calendar. Singer-songwriters, SunSET DJ nights, themed gatherings, visiting food vendors, and special events can transform the entire personality of a visit.

  • Know which bar is open. The indoor tasting room and seasonal Vista Bar may follow different schedules. Confirm current hours before making the drive, particularly outside the summer season.

  • Come hungry enough to graze. Cheese, charcuterie, small bites, and other local food options are available. Atwater also identifies itself as vegan-friendly, but guests with specific dietary needs should check the current menu.

  • Plan group visits directly. Online tasting reservations are limited in size. Contact Atwater before visiting with a larger party so the team can confirm current availability and seating options.

  • Bring your dog to the right place. Friendly, well-behaved dogs are welcome on leash in designated outdoor areas. Only service animals are permitted inside the tasting room. Confirm current seasonal rules before arriving.

  • Bring a layer for the final pour. Even beautiful Finger Lakes days can cool quickly after sunset. An extra layer may buy you another hour beside the lake.
