Hudson Valley Open Market

What They Are about

You can measure a town by its Saturday mornings.

Hudson Valley Open Market is a weekly seasonal farmers and makers market in New Paltz, NY, held every Saturday from May through October. But that definition barely scratches it. This is where Ulster County exhales. Where dirt still clings to the carrots. Where the music floats across Main Street and the air smells like fresh bread, grilled sausage, and something sweet you didn’t plan on buying.

Founded in 2024 by siblings Laura Foster and Dave Wagner, the market was born from something simple and powerful: a belief that a real New Paltz farmers market should feel grounded, human, and built for the people who actually live here. Not curated for tourists. Not staged. Just real.

The setting is practical, a wide-open lot at the New Paltz Middle School on Main Street, walkable from the village center, easy parking, easy access. But what fills that space is anything but ordinary. Twenty-five to thirty rotating vendors every week, farms pulling produce straight from Ulster County soil, bakers pulling bread from ovens at dawn, makers laying out jewelry, ceramics, candles, textiles. You don’t wander here. You drift.

Live music runs nearly the entire market, two sets every Saturday, 10am to noon and 1pm to 3pm, played by local musicians who know the rhythm of this place. Monthly anchor events give the season shape, the Plant and Seedling Sale in May, Pride in June, Kids Day in September, and the Halloween finale with the unapologetically joyful Howl-A-Ween dog costume parade in October.

This Hudson Valley farmers market is not about spectacle. It’s about repetition. Showing up. Buying your greens from someone whose hands are still stained from the field. Talking to the maker who stitched the bag you’re holding. Listening to music that doesn’t feel piped in, but lived in.

“It takes a Village” is more than a mission statement here. It’s operating principle. With growing vendor numbers, new community service opportunities, and expanded sponsorship programs launching for 2026, Hudson Valley Open Market is evolving without losing its center.

If you want to understand New Paltz, come on a Saturday. IYKYK!
