Walkway over the Hudson

What They Are about

With breathtaking 360-degree unobstructed views of the magnificent Hudson River and surrounding scenic valley, Walkway Over the Hudson literally provides a bird’s eye view of one of the Hudson Valley’s most treasured landscapes.

From 212 feet about the Hudson River, visitors can walk, run and cycle the 1.28 mile wide, flat surface that is surrounded on both sides by a chest high safety railing.

There are ADA handicapped accessible entrances on both sides as well as a 21-story ADA accessible glass elevator making this space welcoming and open to all.
Opened in 2009 as the Walkway Over the Hudson State Historic Park, the Walkway is aneducational attraction as well, offering a mobile web tour, signage and historic photos, as well as an interactive map to help visitors explore the Greater Walkway Experience Discovery Zones and regional attractions on either side. Group tours are available by reservation.

With spectacular views extending as far north as the Catskills and south to the Hudson Highlands, the Walkway attracts more than 500,000 visitors per year and is a must-see activity in the Hudson Valley.

Our Notes

  • The Highland side is easily accessed with no stairs or elevators. There is plenty of free street and off street parking. This side of the bridge has a few food trucks and an old rail car you can visit. There is also a visitor center on this side with maps and info.

  • There is no shade on the walkway so bring a happy on a sunny day or wear sunscreen

  • You have views of Poughkeepsie, the Mid Hudson Bridge & the mountain/hills of trees in the distance

  • Bring your bike and ride along the rail trail that connects to either side of the bridge

  • The eastern side of the bridge has an elevator, which is a really good way to get down to town, especially if you plan on doing the loop that includes the Roosevelt bridge. It's nice and big and accommodates bicycles, but don't look out the window if you don't like heights!
