There's a Prehistoric Sex Rave Happening in the Hudson River, and Nobody Told You

Somewhere off the shore of Hyde Park, under the same water where people paddleboard and toss out crab lines and pretend not to think about what's touching their ankles, there is a fish the length of a Volkswagen Beetle currently thundering.
Not swimming. Not splashing. Thundering. Like, scientifically documented, peer-reviewed, someone-had-to-double-check-it's-not-a-train thundering.
This is not a metaphor I'm building toward. This is the actual finding. Researchers just confirmed, for the first time in recorded history, that Atlantic sturgeon — a species that has been cruising rivers since before flowers existed — make sound. And the sound they make, while spawning, in our river, thirty minutes from wherever you're reading this, is a deep, rolling rumble that scientists are describing as a metallic timpani kettledrum. One researcher said you can feel it more than hear it. Another compared the whole event to a "cacophony."
I don't know how else to say this. There has been a 100-million-year-old fish drum circle happening in the Hudson every June and July, and it took modern bioacoustics technology to catch it in the act.
Okay, But What Actually Happened
A team from Cornell's K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics, working with the NY State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New York State Water Resources Institute, dropped hydrophones — underwater microphones, essentially — into a stretch of the Hudson near Hyde Park. This particular stretch matters: it's believed to host the largest known Atlantic sturgeon spawning aggregation in the entire United States. Not the Northeast. Not New York. The country. It's happening here, and most of us didn't know it was a location worth Google Maps-pinning.
The hydrophones recorded 31 days of continuous audio across spring and summer. In April, before the sturgeon arrived, there was nothing — silence, river noise, the occasional Amtrak rattle. Then, as the fish showed up and spawning season kicked into gear in June and July, the recordings picked up something else entirely: nearly 7,700 individual low-frequency rumbles, peaking around 44 hertz, which is right at the bottom edge of what a human ear can register. By the height of spawning season, researchers say the rumbles had built into a full underwater roar.
Lead researcher Rebecca Cohen, a postdoctoral bioacoustics scientist at Cornell, described the sound as pulses, "like someone is striking a drum," layered into a continuous low thunder. Her colleague Maija Niemistö, a science educator with NYSWRI stationed at the DEC's Norrie Point Environmental Center in Staatsburg, put it even more bluntly: it's less like hearing a sound and more like being inside one.
Here's the part that got me, though — the researchers didn't even set out expecting this. They initially assumed the low rumbling was noise pollution: passing trains, boat traffic, the general industrial hum of a river that runs alongside a very active rail corridor. It was only after they filtered that stuff out — and separately filtered out percussive thuds from freshwater drum fish, a nonnative species with its own noisy habits — that they realized they were left with something that had never been documented before. To confirm it wasn't some fluke of Hudson River acoustics, they recorded captive Atlantic sturgeon in a tank at a hatchery in South Carolina. The sounds matched exactly.
So: it's real. It's confirmed. It's published in the journal Endangered Species Research. And it's the first time anyone has ever recorded this species making a sound of any kind, in the wild or otherwise.
So Why Is the Fish Thundering, Exactly
The leading theory is, forgive me, exactly what you think it is. Atlantic sturgeon spawning involves males aggressively thrashing against females as they fertilize eggs — a behavior that's been directly observed in hatchery settings. Researchers believe the thunder is generated by that thrashing, possibly amplified by the resonance of the fish's swim bladder, an internal gas-filled organ that can act a bit like a drum. So the sound isn't so much a sturgeon "talking" as it is a sturgeon slamming into another sturgeon so hard that the collision becomes audible from the surface.
Whether it's purely a mechanical byproduct of mating or an actual form of communication between sturgeon is still an open question. Some researchers who weren't involved in the study have floated the idea that the thunder could function as a signal — a way for spawning fish to coordinate or locate each other in dark, murky water. Nobody's ruling that out. Which means there's a live scientific possibility that these fish are, on some level, talking to each other through what is essentially a bass drop, and we've just never been listening in the right place before.
Either way: there is a good chance that if you've been near the river in Hyde Park in the last few summers, something the size of a compact car was headbutting another compact-car-sized fish twenty feet beneath your kayak, hard enough to shake the water.
Meet the Fish Responsible
Atlantic sturgeon deserve a beat of their own here, because they are, frankly, unhinged as a species in the best way. They're often called living fossils, with a lineage that traces back roughly 100 million years — meaning their ancestors were doing this exact thing while actual dinosaurs were still walking around. They're armored with rows of bony plates instead of scales, they have no teeth, they filter-feed off the river bottom with a vacuum-like mouth, and a mature adult can stretch well past six feet and weigh more than a grand piano. They're also endangered, largely due to historic overfishing, habitat loss, and the general chaos of turning a river into an industrial and commercial corridor over the last two centuries.
Which is exactly why this discovery matters beyond the "wait, what" factor. Sturgeon spend most of their lives at sea and only return to freshwater rivers like the Hudson to spawn, and pinpointing where and when that spawning happens has historically been difficult — you can't easily track a fish that stays submerged near the riverbed. But if spawning is reliably accompanied by this specific acoustic signature, researchers can use hydrophones to identify new spawning grounds without ever having to net or disturb the fish. That has real conservation stakes. Cornell's team is already sharing the approach with researchers in other sturgeon habitats along the Atlantic coast — Maine, Delaware, the Chesapeake — meaning the work happening quietly in our stretch of river could end up shaping how an endangered species is protected up and down the entire East Coast.
There's also a less clinical, more human reason this stuck with me. One of the researchers noted that industrial noise near known spawning grounds isn't a small inconvenience for these fish — in a related study, sturgeon were observed actively avoiding a section of the Hudson during bridge pile-driving construction, then returning once the work stopped. These are animals that are listening, reacting, adjusting their behavior around the noise we make. And it took us until this year to figure out they're making noise of their own.
Why This Is the Most Hudson Valley Thing I've Read All Summer
We live in a region that's spent decades being marketed as the place with the covered bridges and the apple orchards and the guy who paints Hudson River School landscapes for a living. All of that's true and lovely. But somewhere underneath the calm, reflective, extremely Instagrammable surface of this river, there is an ancient, six-foot, toothless, armor-plated fish smashing into another ancient six-foot fish hard enough to generate a sound that scientists needed specialized equipment to properly hear — and it's been happening every single summer, for who knows how long, completely unnoticed, right where people go to watch sunsets.
Bannerman Castle gets the postcards. The Storm King sculptures get the wedding photos. But right now, this month, in the actual water, there's a phenomenon stranger and older than any ruin on this river, and it didn't need restoration funding or a nonprofit trust to keep existing. It's just been quietly happening the entire time, waiting for someone with a hydrophone to notice.
So next time you're standing on a dock in Hyde Park at golden hour, feeling very picturesque about your surroundings — know that there's a decent chance a prehistoric fish the size of your car is, at that exact moment, somewhere below you, absolutely going for it. And thundering the whole way through.
