October Is Out of Control: 48 Events North of NYC
October has absolutely lost it's mind.
There are 48 reasons to leave the house this month, and somehow none of them involve behaving normally. We are talking giant glowing pumpkins, five-star show jumping, dark carnivals, mushroom walks, a Victorian village with a missing girl, 500 Revolutionary soldiers marching into battle, entire weekends devoted to pickles, empanadas, wool, beer, indie films, witches, flamenco, comedy and at least one event where dressing like you fell down the wrong rabbit hole is basically encouraged.
This is the month when every friend group has six competing plans, three unread links in the group chat and one person saying “wait, which Saturday is that?” every 20 minutes.
So we did the fighting for you.
These are the 20 events we would plan around first, followed by 28 more reasons to keep the car keys nearby. Some are huge. Some are weird. Some are weirdly huge. A few sound like somebody made them up after two drinks and somehow got a permit.
Perfect.
Pick one thing you already know you will love, then pick one thing that sounds just unhinged enough to become the story you tell all winter.
October is not asking for balance.
October is asking you to go.
Before you go: Dates, schedules, weather policies and ticket availability can change. Follow each official event link for the latest information before heading out.
The October Top 20
These are the major crowd-pullers, our active partners, and the editorial favorites that give October its particular fever dream of a personality.
Country Living Fair
October 2–4, 2026 | Rhinebeck
More than 275 antiques dealers, makers, designers, food stops, demonstrations and live Americana music turn the Dutchess County Fairgrounds into a three-day treasure hunt. The fun is in letting one absurdly good find derail your entire plan for the day.
Give it time. You can talk yourself out of the brass lamp, find a better brass lamp ten minutes later, grab something to eat, then head into Rhinebeck convinced you won the weekend.
The Highlands Cup
October 7–11, 2026 | Amenia
Major League Show Jumping brings elite riders and enormous, finely tuned horses to Amenia, where the atmosphere shifts from polished fall afternoon to full crowd-holding-its-breath in a matter of seconds.
You do not need horse-world credentials to get hooked. Watch one rider clear a jump that looks physically unreasonable, then enjoy the rare sporting event where the athletes have better hair than everyone in the grandstand.
Hudson Jazz Festival
October 2–4, 2026 | Hudson
Hudson does not put this festival in one room and call it a day. Jazz spills into Hudson Hall, shops, restaurants and late-night rooms, giving the town a soundtrack you can keep walking through.
Catch a set, disappear into a shop, find dinner, then follow the sound somewhere you had not planned to enter. Hudson is already excellent at an unhurried wander. This gives the wander a pulse.
The Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze
September 18–November 8, 2026 | Croton-on-Hudson
Thousands of hand-carved pumpkins take over a historic Hudson Valley estate after dark because someone correctly decided one jack-o’-lantern on a porch was wildly insufficient.
Book the timed ticket before you plan the night. Then do dinner, jackets and no rushing. Your phone will try its best, but the scale of the thing makes much more sense in person.
Sleepy Hollow After Dark
Twilight Village
October 2–31, 2026 | Sleepy Hollow
Philipsburg Manor becomes the after-dark version of Sleepy Hollow people quietly hope exists: local legends, odd encounters, fortune telling and a Halloween night market along the old grounds.
This is the right call for the group with mixed feelings about being chased by actors. Wander, linger, peek into the market, then take the party to dinner nearby with everybody still in a spooky mood.
Masquerade of the Red Death at Lyndhurst
October 2, 2026 | Tarrytown
A Gothic Revival mansion on the Hudson already knows how to make an entrance. Add a Poe-inspired masquerade and you have an October night with enough drama to justify digging through the closet for your most unreasonable outfit.
Dress like you understood the assignment. This is for the friend who has been waiting all year to deploy a cape, gloves, a dramatic collar, or all three.
Hudson Valley Flamenco Festival
October 2–3, 2026 | Gardiner
Spanish guitar, voice, rhythm and dancing hit an intimate Gardiner room hard enough to make a seated audience forget how to breathe normally. Every heel strike lands like a small act of defiance.
Make the drive with someone who loves live art. The ride home will include several versions of the question: how is that physically possible?
Hudson Oktoberfest
October 3, 2026 | Hudson
Craft beer, cider, food, live music, vendors and a crowd fully prepared to wear something questionable in the name of October give Hudson a proper fall party. Upper Depot Brewing is the home base, but the whole town gets the benefit.
Get there while the day still has room to breathe. Eat something great, find your drink, and stay for the music and animal-rescue benefit rather than treating it like a quick stein photo.
Belleayre Fall Festival
October 3–4 & 10–11, 2026 | Highmount
Belleayre gives peak foliage the unfair advantage of a gondola, then adds food trucks, makers, music, brews and a mountain absolutely showing off in every direction.
Take the lift. That is the move. Then come back down for the festival and build the day around being outside while the Catskills are operating at maximum volume.
O+ Festival
October 9–11, 2026 | Kingston
Music, public art, performances, comedy, wellness and an artist-healthcare exchange collide across Kingston without feeling like somebody assembled a festival from a standard checklist. It is exactly the kind of weekend that changes the energy of a city.
Buy the wristband, study less and move around more. Follow a sound into a room you were not planning to enter, find a mural, catch a set, and let the weekend surprise you.
NYS Empanada Festival
October 10, 2026 | Newburgh
Newburgh’s riverfront gets handed over to empanadas, drinks, music, artists and a great many people suddenly developing highly confident opinions about fillings.
Come hungry with a system: one classic, one wild card and one recommendation from the person in line ahead of you. Then walk the waterfront with something fried in one hand and a very serious food take in the other.
Cirque Du Creep:
Alice in Horrorland
October 10, 2026 | Beacon
Alice took a wrong turn somewhere between Wonderland and Beacon, and the result is a wonderfully unhinged fall night filled with 100+ vendors, roaming characters, strange installations, tattoos, food, drinks and enough dark carnival energy to make a normal makers market feel painfully responsible.
Wear the costume. That is not a suggestion from the sidelines. Come ready to meet artists, find something strange to take home and stay long enough for the event to become exactly as weird as promised. MORE INFO HERE ↗
Woodstock Film Festival
October 14–18, 2026 | Woodstock and beyond
For five days, more than 100 narrative, documentary and short films take over Woodstock, Kingston, Rosendale and Saugerties, with almost every screening followed by a cast or crew Q&A. The 27th festival still knows its best trick: put the next filmmaker you will brag about discovering on the same schedule as names like Britt Lower and legendary animator Bill Plympton.
Build a day around the stuff that does not feel like a normal multiplex: Britt Lower in conversation plus Sender, ShortForm Focus for emerging filmmakers, Bill Plympton getting grilled by Signe Baumane, or the beautifully weird Homunculus night at Unicorn Bar with WFF’s first zine launch party. Pick one safe bet and one thing you know nothing about. That is how this festival gets you.
Spellbound Festival
October 17–18, 2026 | Carmel
Spellbound drops you into the fictional Victorian village of Ashbury, where a girl has vanished, the townspeople are acting suspicious and the mystery follows you through the entire festival. There is a haunted trail through the woods, fire performers, aerialists, roaming characters, live music, street magic and a Mystic Market packed with oddities, candles, crystals, leather goods and more.
Bring the friend with the dramatic cloak, a strong opinion about witches, or both. Let the atmosphere win and take the long way through.
Rosendale International Pickle Festival
October 18, 2026 | Rosendale
Rosendale has spent decades proving that pickles deserve their own festival, and at this point the argument is over. Expect an entire day devoted to briny creativity, with pickle vendors, strange snacks, contests, live entertainment and enough variations on the theme to make you question how many foods can reasonably be submerged in vinegar.
Go with a sense of humor and a willingness to try something that has no business being pickled until it proves you wrong. The town has been committed to this bit for decades. Respect the work.
REV FEST 250:
Battle of White Plains
October 24–25, 2026 | Pound Ridge
Five hundred living historians, British and Continental Army encampments, musket fire, artillery, period trades and two miles of Revolutionary-era action turn Ward Pound Ridge Reservation into something much bigger than a history lesson. The centerpiece is a large-scale reenactment of the Battle of White Plains, with both armies assembling and marching toward the fight.
Bring the history person and the person who claims history is not their thing. Somewhere between the cannon fire, spies, soldiers, craftspeople and stories of the civilians caught in the middle, both of them are going to find something they did not expect.
Catskill International Film Festival
October 9–11, 2026 | Catskill
For three days, Catskill hands the screen over to independent filmmakers, documentaries, shorts, genre experiments and the kinds of stories that rarely get a giant multiplex rollout. The fun is in the discovery. You can walk into a screening knowing almost nothing, then walk out wanting to corner the filmmaker with questions before dinner.
Do not choose one screening and vanish. See a movie, argue over dinner, then return for the weirdest title on the schedule. That is how you find the one you keep recommending for months.
Hudson Valley Dance Festival
Saturday, October 10, 2026 | Historic Catskill Point, Catskill
World-class dance lands on the Hudson River as acclaimed companies and choreographers bring bold new work and premieres to Historic Catskill Point. The annual festival pairs serious stage talent with one of the region’s most dramatic waterfront venues, while supporting Dancers Responding to AIDS and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Get dressed up, settle in and let yourself be surprised. Even the person who says dance is not their thing will have an opinion by the end.
Catskills Comedy Festival
October 16–18, 2026 | Catskill
For three days, downtown Catskill turns into one very funny little river town, with 14 events spread across seven walkable venues. Stand-up, alternative comedy, panels, physical comedy, local showcases and youth programming share the schedule, with performers coming in from national stages alongside Hudson Valley comics who may be getting their biggest room yet.
Treat it like a festival instead of buying one ticket and disappearing. Catch a headliner at the Community Theatre, wander over to Avalon Lounge for something completely different, then let whoever made you laugh hardest determine where the night goes next. Your group chat has had the microphone long enough.
Colors in the Catskills
October 3–4, 10–11 & 17–18, 2026 | Hunter
Hunter Mountain turns peak foliage season into three full weekends of chairlift views, mountain air, live entertainment, food, drinks and fall energy at elevation. The scenic ride is the excuse, but once you are up there looking out over the Catskills, it becomes very easy to understand why people build an entire October weekend around this mountain.
Bring the person who says they only want to see the leaves and then becomes very interested in a pretzel and a beer garden. The mountain is doing all the heavy lifting here.
28 More October Picks
October 3, 2026 Heritage, Harvest, and Horse FestivalFort Ticonderoga Fort Ticonderoga throws an old-school fall festival in one of the most ridiculous autumn backdrops in New York. Wander the King’s Garden beneath heirloom apple trees, watch working-horse demonstrations, meet the resident oxen, shop the farmers’ market, hitch a wagon ride and then willingly disappear into a six-acre corn maze overlooking Lake Champlain. History sneaks in while you are busy having a very good fall day. | October 2–November 1, 2026 Dogwood Acres Pumpkin PartyMiddletown Dogwood Acres is what happens when a simple pumpkin-picking plan starts collecting side quests. Hayrides, a corn maze, farm animals, pumpkins and plenty of room to wander turn this into the kind of fall stop where the kids burn energy, the adults accidentally stay for hours and everybody leaves carrying something orange. |
October 2 - 5 2026 Taste Sullivan CatskillsSullivan County If your preferred way to understand a place is to eat your way through it, point the car toward Sullivan County. Taste Sullivan Catskills is built for grazing, discovering local flavor and letting one good bite turn into three more stops. Come hungry, abandon the idea of a sensible lunch and let the Catskills handle the itinerary. | October 3 2026 Catskill Food FestivalCatskill Catskill gets a food-first excuse to wander town with an appetite and very little commitment to a normal meal. Work the vendors, follow whatever smells best and save enough room to be talked into one more thing on the way out. Pair it with a Main Street stroll and suddenly lunch has become the entire afternoon. |
October 3 - 4 2026 Hudson Valley Apple Festival at Barton OrchardsPoughquag Barton Orchards does not believe in subtle fall energy. Apples, orchard air and the full Poughquag autumn machine make this a proper all-day operation, especially for the friend who claims they are only stopping for cider doughnuts. Give that person twenty minutes. They will be carrying apples and making plans for the next activity. | October 3, 2026 Oktoberfest at Catskill BreweryLivingston Manor A Catskills brewery, crisp mountain air and Oktoberfest are already doing enough work before anybody pours the first beer. This is the stop for people who prefer their fall festivals smaller, looser and attached to an actual mountain-town weekend. Have the beer, wander Livingston Manor and resist the urge to start looking at real estate. |
October 3 & 24, 2026 Catskill Fungi Mushroom Walk, Cooking, and TastingPine Hill Finally, an October activity for the person who looks at the forest floor instead of the foliage. Walk the woods, learn what is actually growing down there, then move from identification to cooking and tasting. It is nerdy, delicious and just strange enough to make another pumpkin patch feel like you are repeating yourself. | October 3 2026 Sleepy Hollow Music FestivalSleepy Hollow Sleepy Hollow already has October atmosphere coming out of the pavement, so giving the village a live-music soundtrack feels almost unfair. Go for the performances, then keep the night moving through town while everything still feels a little theatrical. This is a very easy plan to turn into dinner, drinks and a much later drive home than intended. |
October 8–25, 2026 Phoenix Festival: Live Arts in NyackNyack For more than two weeks, Nyack turns into a live-performance scavenger hunt with theatre, dance, comedy, music and delightfully weird experiments tucked into venues around town. One night might mean Shakespeare, another an audience-driven spy comedy or actors performing brand-new plays almost sight unseen. Pick something you would never normally buy a ticket for. That is where this festival gets interesting. | Fridays–Sundays through November 1, 2026 Autumn Glow FestivalNew Rochelle Glen Island Park gets rewired after dark with hundreds of glowing lanterns, enormous illuminated creatures and a waterfront full of color. Traditional Chinese lantern-making meets modern LEDs along Long Island Sound, which gives this a completely different visual language from the pumpkin-and-haunted-house side of October. Go after sunset and let New Rochelle get wonderfully unreasonable. |
October 10–12, 2026 Family Fall Fest & Craft Brew GardenBear Mountain Bear Mountain already looks like somebody overproduced fall, then the Inn adds live music, local makers, seasonal food, family activities and a craft beer garden full of New York breweries. Add the carousel, pedal boats and mountain scenery and you have a weekend plan that works for wildly different age groups without making anyone feel like they compromised. | October 10–11, 2026 Bristol Mountain Fall FestivalCanandaigua The Fall Sky Ride is the move here. Float above the Bristol Hills while the trees are showing off, then come back down for food, entertainment and the rest of the festival. This is foliage viewing for people who think standing beside the road taking one photo is a criminal waste of October. |
October 10, 2026 Beacon Flow Music & Wellness FestivalBeacon Beacon Flow gives the riverfront a softer kind of festival energy with live music, yoga, tai chi, meditation, chanting, sound baths, local artists, food and wellness practitioners sharing the same park. Go for the music, accidentally do something good for your nervous system and then wander into Beacon feeling suspiciously well-adjusted. | October 10–11, 2026 Gore Mountain Harvest FestNorth Creek Gore Mountain keeps the weekend where it belongs: outside. Mountain color, food, vendors and fall-festival energy fill the base area, while the gondola is sitting right there for anyone smart enough to realize the view is the main event. Take the ride, then reward your excellent decision-making back at the festival. |
October 10 -11 2026 Flaming Leaves FestivalLake Placid Lake Placid takes a normal foliage weekend and adds athletes launching themselves into the autumn sky. Ski jumping and Nordic competition bring actual spectacle to the Olympic setting, while music, food and mountain-town energy keep the rest of the day moving. If your fall plans could use more people flying through the air, this solves that. | October 17, 2026 SLOB FestGeneva The Seneca Lake Order of Brewers has both an excellent acronym and a very good reason to spend a Saturday in Geneva. Nineteen brewers from around Seneca Lake come together for beer, food, music and competition, which means you can conduct extremely serious research while standing beside the lake. This one is 21+, and yes, designated-driver tickets exist for the responsible hero in your group. |
October 17–18, 2026 New York State Sheep and Wool FestivalRhinebeck Fiber people do not play around, and Rhinebeck is where that becomes gloriously obvious. Sheep, wool, spinning, weaving, makers and a staggering amount of handmade obsession take over the fairgrounds for a weekend that can convert even the person who arrived saying they do not need yarn. Famous last words. | October 25, 2026 Walk for Wishes Family Fun Day FestivalSleepy Hollow Sleepy Hollow’s Halloween setting becomes the backdrop for a family fundraiser with an actual reason to care beyond the costumes: proceeds support children with critical illnesses through Make-A-Wish Hudson Valley. |
October 10–11, 2026 Windham Autumn AffairWindham Windham turns the village into one of those fall weekends that makes the drive itself part of the plan. Come for foliage, local flavor and mountain-town wandering, then stay because the Catskills are extremely persuasive in October. This is the easy choice for the group that wants a festival without surrendering the entire day to one fenced-in event. | From October 16, 2026 Harry Potter: A Forbidden Forest ExperienceYorktown Heights FDR State Park becomes a nighttime Wizarding World trail filled with illuminated forest scenes, magical creatures and moments inspired by Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts. Bring the person who still knows their Hogwarts house without hesitation. Everyone else can enjoy the rare Westchester walk where encountering a Hippogriff would actually be part of the plan. |
![]() October 18, 2026 Beacon Sloop Club Pumpkin FestivalBeacon Beacon puts its pumpkin festival where it should be: beside the Hudson. Community energy, music and waterfront fall atmosphere make this one feel less like a commercial harvest machine and more like the town invited everybody down to the river. Go loose on the schedule because Beacon is notoriously good at adding three unplanned stops to any visit. | ![]() October 23, 2026 Spooktacular VictorVictor Victor hands Halloween back to the adults with a walkable trick-or-treat and bar crawl through more than ten local businesses. Drinks, tastings, treats, costumes and an after-party turn Main Street into the rare Halloween plan where carrying a little treat bag feels completely age-appropriate again. Designated driver. Obviously. Then go collect your grown-up candy. |
October 24, 2026 Walkway at NightPoughkeepsie & Highland The Walkway is impressive in daylight. After dark, 212 feet above the Hudson with the lights of Poughkeepsie and Highland on either side, it becomes something else entirely. Wear the jacket you almost left in the car, walk slowly and let a bridge do a surprisingly convincing impression of a proper Saturday night. | October 24, 2026 37th Annual Nyack Halloween ParadeNyack Nyack does not whisper Halloween. The village packs downtown with costumes, floats, music and the kind of crowd that turns watching a parade into an all-afternoon event. Come early enough to wander Main Street before the spectacle starts, then stay after dark when everybody in costume realizes they are already standing in the middle of town. |
![]() October 24, 2026 Fall Into CanandaiguaCanandaigua Downtown Canandaigua goes all in with a farmers market, wagon rides, pumpkin decorating, a costume parade and a Monster Mash Dance-Off. It is wholesome right up until somebody takes the dance competition personally. Pair it with the lake and make the Finger Lakes drive earn its mileage. | September 18–November 1, 2026 (select nights) Pure Terror Scream ParkMonroe Pure Terror is not for the friend who says they want something spooky and means decorative ghosts. Ten haunted attractions, professional scare actors, movie-scale sets and the Guinness World Record for the longest haunted attraction turn one Monroe night into a full endurance test. New for 2026 is Gargoyle Den. Bring the brave friend. They are about to become significantly less brave. |
October 9–11, 2026 Lake George Village Oktoberfest and Fall FestivalLake George Lake George takes the beer-hall formula outside and lets the Adirondacks handle production design. German food, beer, music and vendors take over the village while the lake and mountains sit there being annoyingly photogenic. Build a whole weekend around it because driving home immediately afterward would be a failure of imagination. | October 3, 2026 Titus Mountain 45th Annual OktoberfestMalone Titus Mountain gives Oktoberfest an Adirondack upgrade with chairlift rides, hayrides, music, a costume contest and fireworks packed into one day. Take the lift before the beer if you enjoy making wise choices, then stay through dark for the finale. This is not a brewery stop. It is an entire mountain volunteering for fall duty. |
Your October Survival Plan
There is no responsible way to do all 48, and that is the point. Pick the weekends that feel irresistible, leave room for a detour and accept that at least one excellent plan will lose the calendar fight.
Choose one plan that feels familiar and one that sounds slightly unhinged. Then send this to the group chat, assign the designated driver and make October earn its reputation.
