What Are Those Tiny Polka-Dotted Bugs Hopping Around Hudson Valley Backyards?
The short version: Take spotted lanternflies seriously, but not theatrically.
What are the tiny black-and-white bugs?
The spotted lanternfly, or Lycorma delicatula, is an invasive planthopper native to parts of Asia.
Despite the name, it is not technically a fly. It belongs to a group of insects that feed by piercing plant tissue and consuming sap.
New York’s current population produces one generation each year. Egg masses survive the winter and begin hatching in May. The insects then pass through four immature stages, called instars, before becoming adults.
During their first three stages, the nymphs are black with sharply defined white spots. The earliest may be only about a quarter-inch long. They do not have wings, but they are remarkably good jumpers—particularly when a hand, shoe or camera approaches.
That sudden movement is one reason they seem to appear from nowhere.
By July, the insects begin entering their fourth nymphal stage. They become larger and dramatically change color, developing bright red bodies marked with black and white. Adults begin appearing around the same time and may remain active until a killing freeze.
According to Cornell’s spotted lanternfly life-cycle guide, Hudson Valley residents could now see black nymphs, red nymphs and the first adults within the same general period. In other words, today’s tiny polka-dotted backyard hooligans are about to change outfits.
Why are there suddenly so many?
What looks like a spontaneous swarm is usually the result of many eggs hatching in the same area, followed by young lanternflies congregating on suitable plants.
Spotted lanternflies frequently move up and down tree trunks as they search for new feeding locations. A single plant may attract a conspicuous number of nymphs, while nearby properties see few or none.
They also jump or fall from vegetation onto decks, outdoor furniture, vehicles, play equipment and pool surrounds. Their appearance can feel sudden because the young insects were considerably smaller—and easier to overlook—earlier in the season.
The population did not arrive overnight. We are simply reaching the point in its life cycle when it becomes very difficult to ignore.
Do spotted lanternflies bite people or pets?
No.
Spotted lanternflies do not bite or sting people. They are not interested in blood, they are not poisonous, and they are not hunting your dog.Their mouthparts are designed to pierce plants and consume sap. A nymph landing on a person is an inconvenience, not a medical emergency.
That distinction matters. An invasive insect can pose an ecological or agricultural concern without posing a direct physical threat to every person who finds one on the patio.There is no reason to panic, cancel an afternoon outside or fumigate the yard because several lanternflies have appeared.
Are they killing Hudson Valley trees?
The answer is more nuanced than many alarming headlines suggest.Spotted lanternflies feed on numerous plants, including grapevines, tree of heaven, black walnut, maple, willow, river birch, black cherry and tulip poplar. Their feeding can stress plants, particularly when large numbers gather on the same host.
But Cornell’s current assessment does not support the idea that lanternflies are routinely killing every mature landscape tree they visit.
The greatest documented economic and plant-health risk is to grapevines. Heavy adult feeding can reduce a vine’s ability to store carbohydrates, weaken its winter hardiness and reduce future yields. Severe, repeated pressure can contribute to vine death.
That makes the insect a legitimate concern in a region where vineyards are part of both the agricultural economy and local identity.
Home grape growers should inspect vines now and continue watching them as adult populations emerge. Commercial growers should rely on guidance from Cornell Cooperative Extension or a qualified agricultural professional rather than improvising treatments.
For most homeowners, a few nymphs on an established tree do not mean the tree is doomed.
The sticky mess comes later

The lanternfly’s most noticeable backyard offense may not be the feeding itself. It is what comes out afterward.
Spotted lanternflies consume large quantities of plant sap and excrete a sugar-rich liquid called honeydew. When populations become dense, that honeydew can coat leaves, cars, decks, patio furniture and anything else beneath an infested tree.
It may look and feel like sap, but it is insect waste.
A dark fungus known as sooty mold can grow on the sugary coating. The mold does not directly infect the plant, but a heavy layer may interfere with photosynthesis by blocking light from the leaves. Honeydew can also attract bees, wasps and other insects looking for sugar.
The result is less backyard apocalypse and more sticky, fermenting neighborhood nuisance—with the possibility of real plant stress where infestations are severe.
What should residents do right now?
The most environmentally responsible response is targeted control.
The goal is not to sterilize the backyard. It is to reduce spotted lanternfly numbers and prevent their accidental movement without wiping out native insects caught in the same area.
Crush the ones you can reach
In counties where spotted lanternflies are already established, New York advises residents to kill the insects they find.
Stepping on individual nymphs is simple, immediate and highly targeted. You are not going to eliminate the regional population one shoe at a time, but you can reduce the number feeding and eventually laying eggs on your property.
Nymphs are fast. Approaching from the front may help because they tend to jump forward. Their impressive escape rate will occasionally turn pest management into cardio.
Use a circle trap on heavily visited trees
Spotted lanternfly nymphs repeatedly climb tree trunks, which makes a trunk-mounted circle trap one of the better low-impact management options.
A circle trap uses mesh or screening to funnel climbing insects into a collection bag or container. It does not rely on exposed glue, reducing the risk to birds and other wildlife.
Traps can remove many nymphs from a heavily used tree, although Cornell cautions that no trunk trap will completely protect it. Insects may already be in the canopy, and adults can reach branches without first walking up the trunk.
Be careful with sticky bands
Sticky bands can catch spotted lanternfly nymphs. They can also catch creatures that were never the intended target.
Exposed adhesive may trap birds, bats, squirrels, pollinators and beneficial insects. Stronger glue does not necessarily make a better solution when a bird becomes collateral damage.
Cornell says sticky bands should be covered with a properly installed wildlife barrier, such as screening, and inspected frequently. Anyone unsure how to construct that protection should choose a circle trap instead.
The ecosystem does not need to pay for our enthusiasm.
Vacuum concentrated groups
A shop vacuum can remove groups of lanternflies from accessible trees, vines and structures without spraying the entire area.
The contents must be secured and the insects destroyed before disposal. A vacuum is particularly useful where stomping is impractical or where dozens of nymphs have gathered in one place.
Inspect vehicles and outdoor equipment
Spotted lanternflies are much better hitchhikers than long-distance travelers.
They spread primarily with human assistance, particularly when insects or egg masses are transported on vehicles, trailers, firewood, stone, camping gear, outdoor furniture and landscaping equipment.
The USDA recommends inspecting vehicle doors, sides, bumpers, grilles, wheel wells and roofs before leaving an infested location. Keeping windows closed and parking away from heavily infested trees can also reduce the chance of carrying an unexpected passenger.
This is one of the most important things an individual can do. Killing insects on one tree has a limited effect; preventing them from reaching a new community can matter considerably more.
What not to do
An invasive species does not make every control method environmentally responsible.
Do not spray homemade chemical mixtures
Online remedies involving dish detergent, vinegar, salt, bleach or household cleaners are not automatically safe because their ingredients came from beneath the kitchen sink.
Dish detergent can strip the protective surface from leaves and burn plants, particularly in sunlight. Vinegar and salt may damage vegetation and soil. Homemade mixtures have not been tested and labeled for a specific plant, pest or application rate.
They may also kill native insects and pollinators while failing to control lanternflies hidden elsewhere in the tree.
Penn State Extension issued updated guidance in June 2026 specifically warning residents to avoid home remedies for spotted lanternfly control.
If an infestation is severe enough to warrant insecticide, use only a product legally registered for that site and purpose in New York, follow its label exactly, and consider consulting a certified pesticide applicator.
“More” is not a treatment plan.
Do not leave uncovered glue traps on trees
A strip of adhesive may appear harmless until a small bird, bat or beneficial insect becomes trapped in it.
Use a wildlife guard or select a circle trap. Check any installed trap regularly rather than treating it as a set-it-and-forget-it decoration.
Do not immediately cut down tree of heaven
Tree of heaven is an invasive tree and a preferred lanternfly host, but removing it is more complicated than cutting the trunk.
When improperly cut, the tree may respond by sending up vigorous shoots from its extensive root system. One unwanted tree can become an entire colony.
Effective removal generally requires correctly timed, targeted herbicide treatment followed by cutting after the treatment has moved through the root system. Large specimens or extensive stands are best handled by a knowledgeable professional.
If you are uncertain whether a tree is tree of heaven, identify it before taking action. Native sumacs and black walnut can look similar at a glance, and removing the wrong tree would be a particularly unhelpful plot twist.
Does your sighting need to be reported?
Not every Hudson Valley sighting needs to be submitted to New York State.
According to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, residents do not currently need to report spotted lanternflies found in Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster or Westchester counties. The insect is already documented in those locations.
Residents should kill the insects they can and inspect nearby plants and outdoor objects.
Hudson Valley sightings outside the state’s established reporting-exemption area—including sightings in Columbia or Greene counties—should still be documented and reported.
Take clear photographs of the insect, egg mass or infestation signs, include an object for scale if possible, and record the exact location. Reports can be submitted through the state’s spotted lanternfly reporting system linked from the DEC page.
This county distinction is important. A sighting in Poughkeepsie confirms what officials already know. A sighting farther north may help track the insect’s continuing spread
What should we watch for next?
The little black nymphs will not remain little or black for much longer.
Over the coming weeks, look for larger red nymphs with black-and-white markings. Adults have pale gray forewings covered in dark spots. When they open their wings, they reveal vivid red hindwings beneath.
From September into late fall, females begin laying egg masses on trees and an astonishing range of hard surfaces: rocks, vehicles, trailers, grills, firewood, patio furniture and camping equipment.
Fresh egg masses often look like gray or tan smears of dried mud. Older masses may resemble rows of brown seeds. Each mass can contain dozens of eggs capable of starting the cycle again next spring.
This fall, inspecting outdoor belongings before moving or storing them will become every bit as important as dealing with the insects visible today.
A problem that requires perspective
Spotted lanternflies are invasive. They threaten grape production, create significant nuisance problems and can spread into new areas through ordinary human movement.
None of that requires us to describe them as monsters—or to turn every backyard into a chemical exclusion zone.
Environmental stewardship is rarely as satisfying as declaring one villain and reaching for the strongest available weapon. It asks for something harder: accuracy, restraint and an awareness of what else lives in the path of our solution.
Crush the lanternflies you can reach. Use wildlife-safe traps where numbers are high. Protect grapevines. Inspect vehicles and outdoor equipment. Learn to recognize egg masses. Report sightings where the state still needs the information.
And leave the birds, bees and everything else out of the crossfire.
The spotted lanternfly is already here. Panic will not stop it. Informed, targeted action may help prevent us from carrying it somewhere it has not yet reached.
